Where in the World is Turlock?
Turlock is in the center of the San Joaquin
Valley. Its culture has a variety of
cultural influences including its agricultural heritage and the many
influences
of the San Francisco Bay Area. Turlock has shown a tremendous surge in
economic and business development in recent years.
Turlock's attractive and newly-renovated downtown area is now augmented
by impressive business expansion along the Highway 99 corridor. Yet,
with
all of the new development, the bedrock economic foundation of our area
is primarily agricultural. By driving just a few miles outside of the
attractive housing developments within the city limits, you'll find
thousands
of acres of almond trees, grape vines, and fruit trees. The city of
Modesto (popluation
185,000 plus) is twenty minutes away north, and Fresno (population
400,00
plus) is one and one half hours away to the south.
Our community boasts the presence of California
State University Stanislaus
, a university community with thousands of students. Educational,
civic,
athletic, and cultural events are available to the community.
Turlock is enriched by a rich ethnic diversity. In
additon to the
Anglo, Hispanic, African-American and Asian populace, we are host to a
large number of Assyrian-Americans, East Indian-Americans, and
Portuguese-Americans.
Turlock is within driving distance of many
outstanding California scenic
landmarks. We are just two hours away from downtown San Francisco; two
hours away from the romantic California coastline; two hours away from
Yosemite National Park and other California national parks. The coastal
range mountains to the west and the breath-taking Sierra
Nevada range to the east are visible from our streets.
Springtime begins early in the year. Our summers in
Turlock are long,
and sunshine is plentiful. From late April until middle November, it is
sunny almost every day. The nightly delta breeze makes a
summer
evening walk refreshing. The fall months provide us with sunny days and
cool nights. Our rainfall (only around 15 inches per year) normally
occurs during
the months of November through February, months that are also dominated
by a genuine cold and extended fog.
There are two public high schools located in the
Turlock Unified School
district (Turlock High School, and the new Pitman High School). Turlock
also hots an excellent Christian school, Turlock Christian. Turlock
Junior
High School, Dutcher School and several rural schools graduate Jr. High
students into the High School. There are numerous public and private
elementary
schools withing the community.
The smaller communities of Denair, Hughson, Keyes,
Stevinson,
Ballico, Hilmar, Delhi, Livingston, and several others surround the
larger city of Turlock.
